How the TOEIC works and how to prepare for it
This test assesses the level of knowledge and skills in vocabulary used in the workplace. The exam is divided into two sections: Listening & Reading and Speaking & Writing. The sections are evaluated independently of each other, and candidates often take them separately or only one of them.
TOEIC requires lengthy preparation, which we have made more convenient thanks to the online format. It includes all parts of the exam: listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
Listening & Reading
Candidates can choose between two versions of this section: a 2-hour version, which most participants take, and a 1-hour version (Multistage Adaptive) for employees of certain professional organizations. Each section has several different types of tasks.

- Question & Response: listen to 1 question and 3 answers, choose 1 correct one – 30 points.
- Short Conversation: listen to 10 short dialogues and 30 questions, answer in writing (25 seconds for each).
- Short talk: listen to 10 monologues/presentations on a formal topic, choose 1 correct answer from 3 options for each question – 3 questions for each recording.
Reading
- Incomplete Sentence: choose 1 correct answer from 4 options – 40 questions.
- Passage Completion: fill in the blanks in the sentences.
- Short Reading: read several short texts and choose 1 correct answer from 4 options for each question about each text.
Standard version for 2 hours: 100 questions in 75 minutes.
Multistage Adaptive for 1 hour: 45 questions in 37 minutes.

Preparation for Listening & Reading
Listening
To develop listening skills, we use the Audio-Lingual Method and Direct Method. With their help, we help students overcome the habit of mentally translating the information they hear into Ukrainian. The student’s task is to surround themselves with an “information bubble” of English. They listen to recordings in the original language, try to communicate with the teacher in English, and thus learn to understand native speakers without a translator.
Reading
Our teachers use the Lexical Approach. Instead of memorizing new words, students immediately use them in practice in texts, conversations with each other, and with the teacher. After all, context is what helps you remember new information.
Preparation for Speaking & Writing
Speaking
The preparation consists of the following methods: Communicative Language Teaching, Direct Method, and Audio-Lingual Method. The goal is to adapt the program for students. To show how to correctly apply knowledge in everyday life in order to master it, rather than just memorize it for the test. Any level allows you to combine several words, so students communicate at every stage of learning, not on abstract topics from textbooks, but on specific things that interest them and discuss them in their native language. The teacher only corrects this process and helps the students.
Writing
We prepare for this testing block using the Lexical Approach methodology. Students learn to build lexical structures around ready-made phrases and word combinations. Context also helps here, because the topics they suggest themselves are more memorable than those proposed by the teacher. The written part is more independent than the oral part, and students are more likely to make mistakes, which is good because we also remember more when we make mistakes.

Why choose TOEIC preparation with AP Courses
The non-obvious aspects of preparation
“Where can I find the motivation to prepare?”, “How can I avoid getting confused before the exam?”, “What can I do to prevent emotional burnout during preparation?” — all these questions need answers. Our teachers have been dealing with this for a long time and are happy to share their life hacks for this part of the preparation, which candidates often underestimate.
Our own methodology
We treat learning a foreign language as a psychological quest. Overcoming the language barrier, personalizing the program, memory training, and motivation — this is the Close to You methodology. We have taken the best of offline and online formats and created a symbiosis: the teacher conducts classes remotely, but with all the advantages of traditional learning. More details in the course.
A certificate is not everything
The training program covers all parts of the exam, but it is comprehensive because the knowledge gained will already be adapted to the required field of activity. If a candidate plans to take the exam and go to the US to work for IBM, we will integrate software vocabulary and topics into their training. It is difficult to do this on your own, so we help students adapt their learning to specific requests.
Cooperation
AP Courses is a platinum partner of the Cambridge Club. We offer preparation courses for Cambridge ESOL language exams. Our training is based on expert programs, similar to those in the UK. Our teachers have used these programs to prepare over 500 students for international exams. That is why we are recognized as an online training exam center by Language Cert.
Experience
AP Courses began operating in 2019. Since then, we have transformed our English school into an educational center where candidates have learned foreign languages from scratch, overcome language “plateaus” and “barriers,” improved their high level of proficiency, and prepared for and taken international exams, with over 9,000 students to date.

Frequently asked questions about TOEIC preparation
How does TOEIC differ from IELTS or TOEFL?
TOEIC assesses English in a professional environment. This includes communication in email correspondence, calls in work communities, presentations of products, services, image, communication within companies, and other situations where work is involved and formal speech is required. People who take this test mainly focus on the first part — listening and reading. IELTS and TOEFL are more relevant to academic and everyday environments, and the results of these tests are useful for purposes related to education and immigration. These tests are not divided into Listening & Reading and Writing & Speaking sections, as in TOEIC; here, all skills are tested at once.
How many points do you need to pass the TOEIC at work?
Employment requirements are usually specified in the job posting, as each company has its own expectations regarding the candidate’s skills. But there are certain standards – point thresholds. According to the YBM TOEIC Commission, conglomerates such as Hyundai Group require candidates to score at least 720 points, and Renault Samsung Motors requires 750 points.
Is TOEIC suitable for students?
In addition to employees and employers, students also take the TOEIC, as stated in the test taker’s guide. It is linked to academic activities in several ways. Educational institutions that test the effectiveness of their English language programs offer the TOEIC. It is also taken by students preparing to enter the job market. And also by participants in English language training programs.
How long does it take to prepare for TOEIC?
The time required for preparation is determined individually for each student. It depends on the current level of preparation and the goal, i.e., the expected result — the exam score. It also depends on the intensity and quality of the preparation course. General guidelines based on experience: if the initial level is A2-B1 and the goal is 500-700 points, then preparation will take 1 to 3 months with an intensity of 2-3 classes per week. We apply this calculation to other levels as well. TOEIC preparation courses at AP Courses last from 1 to 3, 6, and 9 months. Managers help candidates choose a course, and teachers determine their readiness.
Can I take the TOEIC online?
Students abroad have the opportunity to take the TOEIC online: there, they take the test from home, under the supervision of a specialist who monitors compliance with the requirements. In Ukraine, it can only be taken at a test center. This is an ETS center, a non-profit organization that conducts educational testing.
How much does the TOEIC exam cost?
The cost of the TOEIC test is $185. You must pay the full amount online by card to a bank account or in cash at the test center. Payment is made after online registration, and you must register for the exam no later than 7 days before it begins. Users register on the official ETS website.
What are some common mistakes made on the TOEIC and how can they be avoided?
They fall into several categories. The first category is direct translation and violations of speech style. The second category includes mistakes related to hasty answers and blind guesses, when students rely on luck. The third category is the deliberate disregard of grammar rules. The fourth category includes mistakes related to time management and psychological state. Based on our experience with the TOEIC, we have come to the following conclusion. Preparation for this international exam involves not only the academic part, studying the test structure and practicing with samples from previous years, but also the candidate’s ability to psychologically prepare for the test, calculate time, and pay attention to details that seem too simple. It’s trivial, but candidates often make mistakes on such points.
Is TOEIC necessary for working abroad?
Yes, this test is required for employment in many international companies in various fields, from aviation to the service industry. It tests how well a candidate is able to communicate with colleagues, management, and clients, and whether they can be an official representative of the company in the international market. But there is another use for this test. Companies use the TOEIC® Tests Institutional Program internally to test the qualifications of their employees, often for entire departments.
What level of English should you start preparing for the TOEIC with?
You can start preparing for the TOEIC at any level, but you need to correctly assess your abilities, time, and readiness for the workload. The result always depends on the starting level. We do not recommend studying professional vocabulary without basic general training, such as level A2, because in this case, the candidate will waste their resources. Therefore, B1 is the best option.
Is it possible to combine studying on the course with work?
Yes, even such intensive preparation as for a professional communication level test can fit into a busy schedule if organized correctly. The candidate will not lose progress as long as they remain disciplined. For a high result, it is enough to allocate at least 3-5 hours of independent work and a minimum of 2 hours of classes with a teacher.
Do you offer a trial lesson before enrollment?
Yes, before starting the TOEIC preparation course, students sign up for a trial lesson to evaluate how the teacher presents the material and learn about the methods we use. It was created for familiarization purposes. The teacher who conducts the trial lesson will not necessarily teach the entire course, as AP Courses offers the option of choosing a teacher based on the student’s needs and preferences.
